An Epidemiological Survey on Cholera in Bu an Area 1969

Abstract
Since 17th century, it was reported that cholera invaded Korea more than 30 times and 487,757 cases were sacrificed. Among the epidemics 1796 one with 370,973 fatal cases was most severe.
The first cholera case in 1969 was found in Gun-san, August 28, and in Ko chang, August 29. The agent of cholera occurred in 1969 was examined as V. cholerae eltor, serotype Ogawa due to biochemical, ecological and serological test.
The characteristics of the cholera occurred previously in many respects.
An epidemiological survey was made toward 60 cases in Bu-an area from Sept. 4 to Sept. 26, 1969 and the following conclusion were obtained.
1. The numbers of the patients occurring and the death were not relation to the age and sex. The patients overs 80 years odd were all death.
Age of patients were ranging from 6 to more than 80. The older age of patients, the higher case fatality rate.
2. Among the food eaten prior to onset, fishes and shells were most predominant with 44.2% and pork and alcohol, particularly at the mourning houses, occupied 38.8% while vegetables and fruits were eaten with 17.0%.
3. The fatality rates were 4.1% among the patients treated at health Center and 83.3% among the patients without treatment.
4. Regarding incubation period (from food intake to onset), it was found that "within 24 hours" was 70.0%.
5. Patients occurred mainly in the area along to coast, and lower onset rate was observed as the distances from sea were far.
6. Secondary attacks in families were very few; out of 56 families, in families 2 cases occurred.
7. Carrier rates among family members and seamen were 3.3% and 1.7%, respectively.
8. At 6 districts, 168 samples from fish market were taken and tested with no positive findings.
